Star Marketing

What is Star Marketing?
  • Star Image can be formed due to historical and cultural circumstances - Links with influences on style or ideas of beauty.
  • Star Image is constructed and can be analysed semiotically - Through visual, verbal and non-verbal ways. Together these signs combine to form the star's image.
  • Central to the economics of the music industry - only STARS guarantee sales and long careers.
  • Stars are represented as 'a persona'
  • Involves mediated identities, we don't really know the stars but feel as though we do through the way the star is marketed.
  • Image is built from promotion, publicity and criticism.
  • Ideologically understood star images are marketable or understandable because they represent socially and culturally shared meanings of musicality or femininity, ethnicity, sexuality etc...

I have created a moodboard above in order to show the sort of image our artist reflects. As the artist was born and raised in South London we have included some more grimey South-London estate images, this would be included in his marketing because he wants to attract the youth of today that live within these poorer, rougher estates. Most of these images are of young black males - These males are all also from similar backgrounds however have found their escape within fashion. Being blogged by PAUSE magazine which is a big male, fashion site. Our artist would be within these creative types of youth, who use their knowledge of their environment and intelligence to really show achievement and contrast against those that have all handed to them within the industry. These artists, designers etc... All want to express their struggles and differences via their street-wear and music. This community is very tight-knit and often all of these different creative's share into each others talents.

I went to see the main inspiration of our character perform live. His choice of set was an intimate gig in a small room - He performed some of his spoken word pieces to soft live acoustics (A change from his normal style.) Whilst he performed he had a live artist draw via a computer projected behind him before finally having his new spoken word's visuals shown as he premiered them to wide audiences that evening.

To emphasise the creative cultures coming together and making movements, Kojey Radical performed at the Tate Britain and had twenty minute intervals for queues of people to see his screening and performance. He managed to create masses of audience and it was quite a ground-breaking moment. A young, black male artist bringing vast viewers to the Tate Britain - Again combining the art culture with the music culture. A huge drive for these young people is to show that they can do things bigger, better and more different than the older more 'better-off' creators of our time. This ever-evolving creative way of young people getting their talent out their is great for their quick building of publicity.
Also our artist makes vast use of online platforms as much of the young peoples communication is via social media. This is also the quickest way for them to communicate with their audience - So often stars of this genre find their fame from Instagram or Twitter first, gaining thousands of followers and becoming somewhat 'Insta/Twitter Famous.' This gives them a great platform in starting their music/arts career.
